-- Linden, NJ (September 8, 2010) – Every Friday evening, a group of 15 -50 men can be seen walking and picking up trash from the streets of Linden. During the past six years, men of Morning Star Community Christian Center have been uniquely interacting with youth on the streets, learning and sharing with them. Relationships are always the most important thing in a community and in Linden, this is no different. This community walk will be a collaborative effort between Greater Mount Moriah Baptist Church and Morning Star. One of the goals of this event is to inspire young men to get involved in how their lives take shape and how their actions affect their future and the community at large.
Set to begin at 6:30p.m. on Friday, September 10, 2010, this community walk is part of an ongoing public engagement effort by Morning Star. “The upcoming community walk is the latest in a series of efforts underway to generate meaningful dialogue in our community on what people want and need when it comes to the role of the church,” says Dr. Therman Evans, Senior Pastor of Morning Star. “If we can get the community activated about life issues before crises arise, we will be well underway.”
Pastor Ronald Green and the men of Greater Mount Moriah are active participants in walking the streets on Friday evenings. “Our young men are vulnerable and we believe that together we can create a powerful movement towards the renewal of hope in as many lives as can be reached. Our hope is to empower men to integrate their faith life with their daily life and provide the support for young men to emulate,” says Pastor Green.
Linden Board of Education member and Youth Pastor, Manuel Donelson, stated “We are committed to helping our communities protect themselves against the ever-increasing threats of gang violence. We need the entire village involved in empowering our youth.”
This community walk is designed to build mutually beneficial relationships with local business owners, neighborhood organizations and residents; in return building a flourishing, healthy, vibrant and actively growing community. Dr. Evans says, “We are making it our business to not only sit back but take action.” Organizers are encouraging men from all faith traditions to participate. It’s hoped that this unique event will become an annual event in Linden. More than 100 men in and around the Linden area are expected to participate. Walk will begin at Greater Mount Moriah Baptist Church.
