Oct. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- SAN DIEGO, CA OCT 4, 2010 Contributors to City Work Press’ newest anthology, Mamas and Papas: On the Sublimeand Heartbreaking Art of Parenting (City Works Press; $12.95; 300 Pages; ISBN: 978-0-9816020-8-0; October, 2010), will be signing and reading at the Upstart Crow Bookstore and Coffeehouse in Seaport Village on October 21st, at 7 pm.
Mamas and Papas, edited by Kelly Mayhew and Alys Masek, includes short fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, and memoir, combining both paternal and maternal insight to the journey that is parenthood.  All aspects of parenthood are explored in this lively and engrossing collection, from the first stirrings of desire for a baby to the bittersweet experience of watching one’s children step out into the world.
Arthur Salm, former editor of the “Books” section in the San Diego Union-Tribune and author of Anyway, describes Mamas and Papas as, “soul-wrenching (and gut-busting) missives from the front lines, dispatched by very, very good writers.”
The anthology features nationally acclaimed authors such as Neal Pollack, Wanda Coleman, Sam Apple, and Dorianne Laux along with San Diego writers like Steve Kowit, Ella deCastro Baron, Jim Miller, and Brandon Cesmat.  While the book celebrates the satisfaction and joy that parenthood offers, it does not shy away from the dark side of parenting.  Writers offer up eloquent and honest testimonies to their anger, frustrations, doubts and failures as parents.
Many contributing authors will be reading their contributions at this Upstart Crow event, including the co-editors Alsy Masek and Kelly Mayhew, as well as Chris Baron, Brandon Cesmat and Ella DeCastro Baron. This event is perfect for those interested in the local literary scene, parents and anyone who has ever even thought of parenthood, or anyone who just wants to enjoy a fall evening by the bay at a charming indie bookstore.
