By: The Wine Room of Cherry Hill From 5 to 7 p.m., everyone is encouraged to shed their shoes and step into a giant, custom-built grape-stomping pit, where they can do their best Lucy impression as they celebrate the arrival of the 2010 California grapes and the start of the fall winemaking season. The Wine Room will donate $10 per stomper to the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter. Refreshments will be served, along with wine samples for those who need to muster up the daring to get grapes between their toes. No registration or reservations are required, and additional donations will be welcomed. “This has been such a great event for the local wine-loving crowd. It’s an incredibly fun time and helps support the great work of the local Alzheimer’s Association chapter,” says Kenton Nice, owner of The Wine Room. “It also opens people’s eyes to the fact that great California wine is being made right here in Camden County.” The actual winemaking process at The Wine Room uses equipment from Italy to crush the grapes nowadays, but the tradition of stomping has long roots, was popularized by I Love Lucy, and is something the Wine Room’s customers frequently request for the fun or a photo. The grapes to be stomped are warmed to room temperature prior to stomping, so they’re not brutally cold on the feet. With the arrival of the California grape harvest in early September, winemaking kicks into high gear, and oenophiles will visit The Wine Room three or four times over the following 10 months to create their own world class wine, which will ultimately bear their name as winemaker on the chosen label. Each session involves about 30 minutes of effort (never call it work), but winemakers spend a couple of hours enjoying food, other wine, and each other’s company. The Wine Room is located at 1 Esterbrook Lane in Cherry Hill, N.J., right off Springdale Road.
