Judicial Corruption in Los Angeles, California - Action Group Launched

"This is conduct associated with the most repressive dictators and police states… and judges must share responsibility when innocent people are convicted.” Prof Erwin Chemerinksy, Dean, Irvine Law School (2001)

July 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Los Angeles, July 9 - Human Rights Alert and Joseph Zernik, PhD, launched a Facebook action group: Free the LA-FIPs (Los Angeles Falsely Imprisoned Persons), [1] The groups stated positions heavily relied on official and unofficial reports previously published, which documented large-scale false imprisonments in Los Angeles County, California, and which called for external investigation of the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles.
The LAPD Blue Ribbon Review Panel Report (2006) stated: "Innocent people remain in prison" and  "...the LA Superior Court and the DA office, the two other parts of the justice system that the Blue Panel Report recommends must be investigated relative to the integrity of the system, have not produced any response that we know of...”
Prof David Burcham, Dean, Loyola Law School, LA (2001) stated:  “…judges tried and sentenced a staggering number of people for crimes they did not commit",
Prof Erwin Chemerinksy, Dean, Irvine Law School (2001) stated:  “This is conduct associated with the most repressive dictators and police states… and judges must share responsibility when innocent people are convicted.”
The group's positions were stated as follows:
1) Richard Fine is held under false and deliberately misleading judicial and sheriff's arrest and booking records - he must be immediately released [2]

2) Official and unofficial reports as part of the Rampart scandal investigation (1998-2000) showed that thousands were falsely imprisoned in Los Angeles County - they must be immediately released. [3]

3) Review of the computerized records of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department documented routine ongoing false imprisonments under false and deliberately misleading arrest and booking records - such practices must be immediately stopped. [4]

4) US and/or international investigation must be instituted of the widespread corruption of the justice system of Los Angeles County, California. [5]
The group hopes to generate international awareness of the alleged widespread corruption of the justice system in Los Angeles County, California, and refusal of the US government to take action over more than a decade.  Human Rights Alert (NGO) filed in April 2010 report with the United Nations in this regard, as part of the first ever review of Human Rights in the United States by the United Nations, scheduled for November 2010.
