June 9, 2010 - PRLog -- BA programme is perhaps the most dependable course offered in Delhi University. Unlike any other course, BA programme gives you an opportunity to study various combinations of subjects. So, it is quite popular among those interested in civil services. It can also be a good option for those who cannot get through an honours course of their choice because of high cut-offs. In such a case, they can take up BA programme to study that course as a part of the combination of subjects. Different colleges offer application papers in the third year, giving students a competitive edge.

Eligibility: Students from all streams can apply to this course, which is offered in 53 colleges. The cut-off for BA programme is usually as high as any honours programme from the arts stream, such as history and political science, and is even higher than philosophy and sanskrit.

However, those who do not have a very high percentage — scoring anything below 90% — can easily get into this course in a popular college. The first cut-off at Hindu College, Kirori Mal College, Hans Raj College and Daulat Ram College last year was 88-92%, 82%, 79-88% and 81-83% respectively. The lowest cut-off was 50% (for a specific combination) at Zakir Husain College, while it was between 62% and 67% at DDU, DCAC, Kalindi and Deshbandhu (evening). The cut-offs dropped by 2-5% in the second list.

Course Content: The old BA (Pass) course was restructured into a much popular BA programme in July 2004. Students of BA programme have to study 12 papers over three years. In the first year, students are taught two discipline courses and two language courses.

In the second year, students have to choose foundation courses, which give basic knowledge of society, economics and politics. In the third year, they have many options in application papers meant to provide practical skills to students. ‘‘Every college offers different combinations of subjects in BA programme. So, the candidate should apply to the course in different colleges according to the subjects they would like to study. At Daulat Ram, we offer 14 discipline courses. It’s a multi-faceted course,’’ said associate professor Ira Pandit. Pankaj Misra, associate professor at St Stephen’s College, said, ‘‘Colleges decide the combinations to be offered depending on the faculty available. If a student can’t get through in BA (honours) economics in any college, he has the option of studying economics in BA programme.’’

Road Ahead: According to Misra, future prospects for BA programme are similar to any honours course in humanities. ‘‘Many students pursue an MBA after this course. One benefit of studying BA programme is that a student can take up postgraduation in any of the subjects he or she has studied during the course,’’ Misra said. Besides, it’s most suitable for those interested in civil services as it gives knowledge of different subjects.
