June 9, 2010 - PRLog -- Nearly 600 students sat for the only online exam in Delhi University on Wednesday. This is the second time that DU has organised an online test for the environmental studies paper as part of the annual exams in the first year of BSc general. This year, 3,281 students from 27 colleges will take the exam over a period of eight days.

‘‘The exam was conducted smoothly without any problem at three centres on the first day. We are going to have four shifts for conducting the exam at seven different centres,’’ said professor A K Bakhshi, director, Institute of Lifelong Learning (ILLL), which has developed the online exam. Environmental studies is a qualifying paper in the first year of BSc physical sciences, life sciences, and applied physical and life sciences. The online test comprises 50 multiple-choice questions to be answered in a duration of one hour.

As per a SC ruling, the paper may be taught across all courses from next year due to which the number of students taking the exam will go up drastically. ‘‘The biggest benefit of conducting an exam online is that we save a lot of time. We know the result of a student as soon as s/he is through through with the test though we do not declare it,’’. Switching to the online mode is a step towards integrating technology with higher education and we would like to see how we can use it for improvement of our examination system
