June 1, 2010 - PRLog -- Learning a new language can open up good career options. Little surprise then that there has been a huge rush for foreign language courses in Delhi University this admission season. The department of germanic and romance studies in DU has already sold more than a thousand forms in just three days for its four undergraduate language courses — BA (honours) in French, German, Italian and Spanish.

These courses have opened up a plethora of opportunities for students in various sectors because of the growing presence of multinational companies. As per the department, students graduating in French, German and even Italian and Spanish have been offered salary packages as high Rs 3 to 5 lakh per annum. Students from all streams can apply for these courses after class XII through a separate form available at the department. The admission to these courses is conducted through a common entrance exam.

Vibha Maurya, head of department, said, ‘‘The foreign language courses have become very popular over the years and its job prospects are really attractive. The highest starting salary offered to our students was Rs 35,000 per month.’’ She further said, ‘‘BPOs had been interested in recruiting our students and now banks, multinational companies, and even schools are hiring students studying these foreign languages. Many schools in the city have started offering foreign languages as a subject. As a result, the demand for teachers has gone up.

Though the department does not have a placement cell, teachers say they often receive mails from companies willing to recruit students. ‘‘We also have a central placement cell in the university through which some of our students are placed,’’ Maurya said. French and German have traditionally been more popular among students as well as recruiters. Many students also get international scholarships for further specialisation in these languages.

Maurya added, ‘‘There has been a huge rush of applicants this year. The forms will be available till June 11. So, we expect to get at least 3,000 applications this time.’’ But don’t expect to get admission so easily as the department has just 39 seats in each language. Anyone with at least 45% aggregate is eligible for the entrance exam scheduled to be on June 17. No prior knowledge of any of these languages is required to study this course. For final selection of students, 70% weightage will be given to class XII marks and 30% to the performance in the entrance test. ‘‘We will test the candidates’ ability to write well and their aptitude for learning these languages. The answers can be written in English or Hindi. There will also be questions on general awareness and issues around these languages
