Older People Facing Pub Peril

April 20, 2010 - PRLog -- A recent article in Over 65 Magazine, a new online magazine aimed at the silver surfer generation, has revealed that older people are facing a crisis due to the high numbers of pubs and inns closing across England.

The article by freelance writer Martin Sayers looked at the reasons behind the unprecedented level of pubs going out of business but according to Over 65 editor Paul Rodman, it was the reaction from his readership that was most significant: “It was an excellent article by Martin but I was still absolutely amazed by the reaction that followed it”, explains Paul, “we are a relatively new magazine but we have been deluged by readers writing in about the pub article. The type of response we have been getting is that older people are feeling increasingly marginalised because of the loss of a pub that was once central to their community – these were places where they would meet up with friends, attend clubs, or simply pop into for a drink and to enjoy the warmth and the happy atmosphere. When they are gone, many older customers are left feeling lost, forgotten and isolated – especially if they don’t drive.”

With over 50 pubs a week closing across Britain, Paul is determined that something should be done about it: “Politicians need to wake up to what is happening – it is an absolute tragedy and is affecting the lives of older people more than most. It’s time the Great British pub received some proper support – from the public and government alike!”
