April 19, 2010 - PRLog -- Shanghai, April 19, 2010 – For LANXESS, the preparation for the World Cup opening match at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg begun five years ago. Then, LANXESS’ business unit Semi-Crystalline Products in Hong Kong and Blue Cube (GB) Ltd. started to develop the breakthrough new stadium seating system “INTEGRA”, with major structural parts made from LANXESS’ Durethan® BKV30 H2.0 900055—the state-of-the-art, tailor-made polyamide 6 material for metal replacement solutions in outdoor applications.

LANXESS Durethan® BKV30 H2.0 900055 forms the high-tech stands, tip-up mechanism and arm rests of the chairs, which are mounted onto aluminum beams at the newly-reconstructed Soccer City Stadium. With the installation of the chairs completed in November 2009, LANXESS’ Durethan® BKV30 H2.0 900055 is ready to go into action as a live spectator crowd of 95,000 diehard soccer fans take their seats to watch the opening and final matches of the World Cup.

The highly versatile Durethan® BKV30 H2.0 900055 engineering plastic is used to replace the metal stands conventionally found in seats at stadiums and other indoor and outdoor venues. The key advantages of using Durethan® BKV30 H2.0 900055 are its strength and durability under static and dynamic loading as well as resistance to corrosion. The stands also have good weathering and UV resistance, which have been tested for five years of outdoor exposure by Blue Cube. Therefore, a key benefit is their low maintenance costs. Additionally, the stands have a smooth design which makes cleaning easier before and after each event as the number of places where chewing gum, dirt and dust can become stuck is minimized.

In the early stage of development, extensive computer simulations provided by the Application Development Group of the business unit Semi-Crystalline Products in Hong Kong were carried out to ensure that the stands of the seats at the Soccer City Stadium made from Durethan® BKV30 H2.0 900055 can withstand the stringent engineering targets defined for the project.

Thomas Babl, Technical Marketing Manager for Asia Pacific, business unit Semi-Crystalline Products, says, “During a soccer match, there are high tensions as opposing fans cheer on their respective teams. Sometimes enthusiastic fans stand on the seats or jump around the stadium. Durethan® BKV30 H2.0 900055 used in the stands of the “INTEGRA” chairs ensures the safety of fans as the structural parts are incredibly strong and have been tested to withstand heavy loads of up to 600 kilogram at the front edge of the seat shell, which is manufactured using a non-filled, blow-molded thermoplast.”

Babl adds, “The use of injection molding allows the seat stands to be designed so that that they are no parts that could trap either feet or hands and that there are no sharp edges that could lead to injury. The seats thus ensure that soccer fans are safe and can enjoy supporting their team during a World Cup match.”

Milan Vignjevic, General Manager for Asia Pacific, business unit Semi-Crystalline Products, says, “The use of Durethan® BKV30 H2.0 900055 in the stadium seats for the World Cup in South Africa has created a new business segment that did not exist before for us. This success further reinforces the versatility of LANXESS’ Durethan® products, which are already well-established in the automotive, electrical and engineering, power tooling and consumer industries.”

Similar seats with stands made from Durethan® BKV30 H2.0 900055 are already installed in various other world-renowned stadiums and the INTEGRA seating system will be used further in several new and upcoming stadiums located in different parts of the world.

The Semi-Crystalline Products business unit belongs to the Performance Polymers segment, which achieved total sales in fiscal 2009 of EUR 2,388 million.
