April 14, 2010 - PRLog -- The Science of Chocolate is scheduled to be one of the discovery-based science experiments during National Lab Day activities on May 12 at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Pennsylvania.

The free event will feature hands-on experiments and is open to high school students.  Plans call for the event to begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 1:30 p.m.  As the only science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) focused comprehensive university between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Harrisburg University encourages high school educators to bring classes to the event in support of National Lab Day.

National Lab Day aims to inspire a wave of future innovators and foster U.S. competitiveness by improving the quality of STEM education in America. A collaboration between government and more than 200 public- and private-sector organizations, National Lab Day will connect students in grades 6-12 to hands-on learning experiences and promote tinkering in laboratory settings. Educators across the country are planning events during May in support of National Lab Day.

Among the organizations that have pledged support for National Lab Day are the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the National Science Teachers Association, the National Science Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Jack D. Hidary Foundation, the American Chemistry Society, the National Institutes of Health; and the Business Roundtable. Together they represent more than 6.5 million professionals and educators.
