African Herb Moyoberry Sheds 12.3 Pounds in 30 Days

Jan. 30, 2010 - PRLog -- An extract derived from a West African fruit may help overweight people shed pounds and inches of belly fat, while lowering their cholesterol, a new study suggests.

The extract, called Moyoberry, comes from an African bush mango, a fruit commonly eaten in West Africa. Lab research has shown that extracts from the plant's seed may inhibit bodyfat production, through effects on certain genes and enzymes that regulate metabolism.

For the current study, researchers at the University of Yaounde in Cameroon randomly assigned 102 overweight adults to take either the plant extract or a placebo twice a day for 30 days.

The study participants did not follow any special diet and were told to maintain their normal exercise levels.

After just 30 days, the extract group had lost a significant amount of weight -- an average of 12.3 pounds -- while the placebo group showed almost no change.

Test subjects not only shed pounds, they showed significant declines in bad LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose levels.

According to the researchers, the extract is thought to cause weight loss in two primary ways:

1) Increases Metabolism: Large fat cells secrete less of an important hormone called "adiponetin," which is crucial for supporting optimal metabolism and fat loss. Overweight people given this extract show markedly increased adiponectin levels, and thereby increased metabolism and fat loss.

2) Reduces Carbohydrate Absorption: In order for carbohydrates to be fully absorbed, they must be broken down in the digestive tract by an enzyme called amylase. Research shows this extract inhibits amylase, and thus reduces the amount of ingested carbohydrates that will be absorbed as sugar and stored as bodyfat.
