Sept. 9, 2009 - PRLog -- Mumbai: Eminent Mumbai-based eco-nutritionist Kavita Mukhi and eminent well-known organic food certification expert Dr Selvam Daniel  will address delegates from the Indian food supply chain at a convention in the Taj President in Mumbai on September 11, 2009.

The three-day convention will look at the opportunities and challenges facing organic food certification in India in view of the growing concerns among consumers about  health-threatening and – in some cases life-threatening -- residual elements in food and the possible entry of GM food.

“The consumer would soon exhibit increasing preference for certified organic food material,” says Dr. Selvam Daniel, Managing Director, ECOCERT India, an affiliate of the eponymous French global certification MNC. “The Indian consumer, especially the discerning mother, is catching up with the certified organic food, demerits of conventional food, etc. It is time for all we stakeholders in the food sector to take the required steps so that we are in a position to meet their just demands. In this regard, organic food certification is assuming increasing importance.”

Among the topics which would be covered at the convention are: organic and fair trade food production, processing and handling standards, biodynamic foods and demeter certification, organic food management systems standards as also certification as per Japanese Agriculture Standards (JAS). The convention will also discuss India's NPOP standards and organic AGMARK standards.

All the stakeholders in the domestic food supply chains or the people engaged in the farm-to-plate chain could benefit from the proceedings. These include farmers, food processors, retailer, catering/ hospitality service providers including hoteliers and consumers.

There will be similar conventions for the cosmetics and the textile sectors on September 12 and 13, 2009 respectively at the Taj President in Mumbai.
