Technomad Asserts Leadership in Green AV Manufacturing

July 6, 2009 - PRLog -- BOSTON - Technomad Associates, LLC, a leader in weatherproof loudspeakers and audio systems since 1995, has positioned itself as a leader in green manufacturing for the AV industry, announcing a series of recent initiatives designed to minimize waste and reduce its carbon footprint around the globe; and its first specification into a LEED-compliant project.

Technomad manufactures all of its commercial and government products at its western Massachusetts facility, where each loudspeaker is bench-built and tested by small teams of craftsmen.  In 2008, the company introduced recycled plastic into its manufacturing process for all black loudspeakers.  The recycled plastic is processed and dyed black for color conformity.

More recently, Technomad altered its manufacturing process to ensure RoHS compliance for sales into the European Union.  Technomad has switched to RoHS-compliant driver and network components for inside its loudspeakers, and eliminated the use of lead within the soldering process — one of six materials banned by the European Union Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) for sales of electronic components and assemblies into Europe.  

The company’s green initiatives have attracted system designers and installers in need of LEED-compliant audio products that also offer high performance.  Functional Communications Corp., an independent Muzak affiliate based in Syracuse, NY, specified 40 Technomad Vernal loudspeakers for an in-store audio and communications systems at a new Price Chopper supermarket in Colonie, NY.  Technomad’s use of recycled plastic, greener soldering process and proximity to the construction site made the company LEED-compliant.  The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System (LEED) was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council to provide standard for environmentally sustainable construction.

The complete Technomad product range is now RoHS-compliant, including Technomad IP56-rated weatherproof loudspeakers, the Schedulon automatic mp3 player and recording system, and the company’s PowerChiton series of networkable, weatherproof powered amplifiers.  Its efforts have been profiled in numerous AV and green trade publications, including ProAV, InfoComm International, Systems Contractor News, Recycling Today and AV Technology.
