Cake ‘n Crumbs Comes a Long Way

June 15, 2009 - PRLog -- Cake ‘n Crumbs, a Mequon, WI based direct sales company (established in 1995),  teaches cake and cookie decorating as well as creative candy making classes. Founder and President, Lori Sandall says “Wow....We’ve come a long way and how fun it has been. One of the more frequently asked questions about Cake ‘n Crumbs is ‘If you’ve been in business so long, why are you still fluctuating with the amount of Instructors teaching?’  This is a valid question that is easily answered – by choice.”

Cake ‘n Crumbs was started by Ms. Sandall so she could offer the services she had personally needed but couldn’t find offered anywhere. She wanted to learn how to decorate a cake for her oldest son’s third birthday but every place she looked from craft stores to recreation departments had her spending time and money on classes and supplies before she even met the Instructor, or was even certain she would like to decorate cakes. She knew that there had to be other people like herself, living on a budget with little time to themselves. “I knew there were many people that wanted to learn how to make cakes for their family and friends but couldn’t afford the time or money to take the few offered classes out there” said Ms. Sandall.   She knew that such a concept, teaching basic cake decorating classes in a home, could bring in a second income for her family, while giving her the social and creative outlet she was looking for.

As her classes began to expand to a 300 mile radius, she realized that this little business she had started had big potential. Unfortunately, by the time she woke up to that fact, she was a single mom with two small boys working as a nurse to carry insurance. Living in an expensive county with no family near-by, the idea of branching Cake ‘n Crumbs into a multilevel tier business was overwhelming.  Lori says “The thought of contracting with Independent Instructors was scary. Could I keep up with the training of new Instructors and then the added sales they would no doubt bring in?”   Well, some things just happen for a reason. Consistently she had people approaching her to give them the same opportunities she had for herself - personal, professional and financial growth. So, she finally accepted the offer of a friend wanting to teach classes ‘just for the fun of it’. With the added help teaching the classes she had booked six months out, Lori was now less overwhelmed with the idea of expansion. So, she did her homework and signed on her first Cake ‘n Crumbs Instructor in 1998 and a multilevel tier business was started.

From there, anyone that approached her to become an Instructor became one if they wanted to. She felt certain that she could service and offer anyone a sound and foundational business opportunity, so long as they understood that she was a one-woman band and that growing-pains would surely happen. It was not a hidden fact that she was and still is under the direction of “In God’s Time” and that she did not want to get too big too fast. Because of this plan, Cake ‘n Crumbs is now a debt-free establishment that is ready to do more than wait for potential Instructors to approach them. They are implementing a business plan to find those many women and men out there that like to bake and create, and that could use a social, financial and creative outlet, like those presently part of Cake ‘n Crumbs.

Unlike many of the big named direct-sales businesses, Cake ‘n Crumbs has no investors.  Because they took their time to grow, they do not have the over-head of a building or employees to cause concern for their business costs. They don’t need to inflate their prices to cover loan debt or investment percentages. Sandall says “Recession. What is that? Every Cake ‘n Crumbs Instructor out there teaching, averages earnings of about $70 each class. Now that is an average, so some Instructors are making closer to $100 each class. And we have Instructors that are booked 2-3 months out.”

Cake ‘n Crumbs offers many services to their customers throughout the year. Services that are free with no strings attached. “Our customers are more than willing to purchase our products because they have the opportunity to use them before they spend any money. In fact, they can earn substantial discounts or even receive products for free, just for hosting one of the many classes we offer.” Ms. Sandall goes on to explain “Most of our customers have no idea how to use the products we sell before they attend a Cake ‘n Crumbs class. And by the end of that class, they have added a Cake ‘n Crumbs Instructor to their list of “friends”. They are more than willing to support that Instructor and utilize them for most of their baking and creating needs.” Cake ‘n Crumbs has added several cookie decorating and creative candy making techniques to their list of classes, offering something for everyone.  

As Lori stated earlier “Wow.....We’ve come a long way.” She adds “My boys are now 15 and 18 and more independent than I’d like. I am remarried to a wonderful business man and no longer need to provide myself insurance or sole support to my boys.” Presently she works only as the President of Cake ‘n Crumbs and will begin setting up hotel conferences all over the Midwest and surrounding areas for those people seeking to meet the Cake ‘n Crumbs team, as they begin launching the business plan they have started.
