Rich Bennett's Music for Underwater Supermarkets Released

Sept. 12, 2008 - PRLog -- Perth, Western Australia and New York City. The Australian music label Hidden Shoal Recordings today announced the release of the debut solo outing by Monocle’s Rich Bennett.

Music For Underwater Supermarkets is a gently giddy journey through eight aisles of Rich Bennett’s imagination, evoking both the wondrous and infinite spaces of childhood and the hazy introspection of an adulthood spent trying to reclaim this sense of wonder. Including the gorgeous single ‘Aisle 8: The Underwater Supermarket’, this instrumental mini-album alternates between jazz-infused compositions of exceptional fluidity and sophistication, and moody miniatures, creating a strangely immersive whole that demands repeat listens.

Sharing a sonic playing field with Nick Drake’s Bryter Layter, Burt Bacharach’s instrumental originals, Sam Prekop’s solo debut and Stereolab’s quieter moments, Music For Underwater Supermarkets also stakes out its own idiosyncratic turf, confirming Rich Bennett’s status as a songwriter and producer of exceptional talent. From the chiming guitars and vibraphones of ‘Entrance’ to the melancholy synth undertow of ‘The Underwater Supermarket’, this is a shining and strangely moving symphony to daydreaming, and inviting territory for exploration on headphones.

Since early childhood, the music of supermarkets, elevators and doctor’s offices has been floating around inside Rich Bennett’s head. When Bennett began to make his own music, much of it seemed to come from the first delightfully soporific melodies he heard while riding around in his mom’s shopping cart as a child. Bennett has been involved in many musical projects over the years, including avant-rock group Friendly Bears and of course Hidden Shoal’s very own Monocle, whose stunning debut Outer Sunset made a number of top ten of 2007 lists as well as garnering a mass of glowing reviews. He has also performed and recorded with Seattle-based cinematic rock band Hotels, written chamber music for the Pamplemousse New Music Ensemble, and produced NYC-based singer-songwriters Rebecca Pronsky, Mari Rosa and Dan Shuman.
