On the morning of August 4, 1892 one of the most notorious cases in the history of American criminology would occur. The bodies of two Fall River, Massachusetts residents, Andrew and Abby Borden, were discovered in their home with multiple wounds from an axe. Lizzie Borden, the youngest daughter of Andrew, along with the maid, Bridget Sullivan was the only people in the house at the time of the murders. Lizzie Borden soon became the primary suspect, and seven days following the gruesome murders, Lizzie was arrested. Ten months later, the trial began setting off a media frenzy.

It was no secret in the town of Fall River, Massachusetts that Andrew Jackson Borden was a miser, and once the trial began, the media uncovered the dirty secrets of the Borden family. As a successful businessman, Andrew obtained one of the most prominent homes in town along with other assets and properties in the area. He was known to force his family to eat half-spoiled food in order to save money, and quite often argued with his second wife, Abby over spending. It was widely rumored that Abby was out to steal the future inheritance of Lizzie and Emma, the daughters of Andrew. The motivation for murder was initially believed to have been to offset any change of the will from Lizzie and Emma to Abby. Even though an axe was discovered in the cellar of the home, no other evidence could support the indictment, and Lizzie was not found guilty.
