Plastics Are Making People Sick

More and more studies indicate plastics are making their way into our bodies causing disease. Common consumer goods such as baby bottles, lined tin cans, and storage containers are leaching chemicals into our food. Alternatives are recommended.

April 7, 2008 - PRLog -- Information keeps rolling in about the potential health hazards of chemicals found in plastics in common household items. A study conducted by environmental groups indicates that most Americans’ bodies contain toxic substances courtesy of major chemical companies that produce shampoo, tin cans, plastic containers, upholstery, and baby bottles.  Newsweek‘s article “The Chemicals Within” indicates that studies have found “chemicals in our bodies that don’t belong there.”

“Last year major recreational retailers pulled polycarbonate water bottles off the shelves over concern that BPA could leach into the drinking water.  Later in the year, the Environmental Working Group examined baby formula from cans and found that the epoxy lining was leaching BPA into the formula.”(Healthy Child Healthy World article: Polycarbonate: The Plastic that Keeps on Giving…BPA)  BPA is Bisphenol A, an industrial chemical used to make polycarbonate plastic resins, epoxy resins, and other products.  BPA is made out of petroleum, namely crude oil, which undergoes several chemical processes.  BPA has been found to mimic estrogen in animals.

HealthyKitchenware.com co-founder, Cynthia Bistrain, who was diagnosed with endometriosis in 2005, was surprised to discover that man-made chemicals mimic estrogen in the human body and contribute to hormone imbalance.  These chemicals can be found in plastics, detergents and antibiotics among other common consumer products.  These substances have been in our environment for less than 70 years, so their effects are only now being studied.  She is managing endometriosis, a painful reproductive system disease, after seeking treatment and making lifestyle changes.
Amongst other things, she changed all their refrigerator containers to glass and all their plastic coated pots and pans to stainless steel or enameled cast iron products.

Through HealthyKitchenware.com, Cynthia hopes to help others protect themselves from the effects of plasticizers.  In addition to offering glass and stainless steel products for the kitchen, baby and lunchbox, the site features advice and information on reducing toxins to create a healthier lifestyle.
