Go Green: Reduce our Oil Dependency

May 12, 2009 - PRLog -- It is not only at the pump that we use petroleum and its derivatives.  Here are ten simple things that you can do to help the planet.  When you help the environment, you help yourself: “it’s the circle of life.”

1.   Trade in your plastic fridge storage containers for glass storage containers and do not worry anymore about re-heating in the microwave.

2.   Stop using plastic bags.  They are a petroleum derivative that does not biodegrade.  So, bring your own to the store.  Instead of sandwich baggies, use re-usable sandwich wraps.

3.   Read labels on your lotion, shampoo and all beauty and personal care products. Avoid petroleum jelly. Use petroleum free and additive free bath and body products.

4.    Stop using your clothes dryer and let your clean clothes catch some healthy rays.  Use solar power!

5.   Use re-usable stainless steel food storage containers. for your lunch box or picnic.  This is a re-usable BPA free option that saves you money in the long term, and helps you eat healthier.

6.   Avoid products containing paraffin wax. Get your kids, natural beeswax crayons. Burn natural beeswax candles. Most crayons and candles are made with paraffin wax, a petroleum derivative. Skips the noxious fumes!

7.   Disconnect appliances when not in use. Save energy and money. Consider replacing your top loader washing machine with a front loader to save energy and water.

8.   Support local retailers and join your local CSA. Keep more of your money in your community, support local agriculture and eat healthy fresh produce.

9.   Use a reusable stainless steel water bottle to keep hydrated and skip the plastic bottles.

10. For babies, use BPA free glass bottles.  For kids, use stainless steel dishes instead of plastic.

Oil is a non-renewable resource.  Reducing our dependence makes us stronger.  Making environmentally friendly choices is not hard, just takes a little extra thought.
