The Grocery Jungle-how do you know what’s healthy?

Finding healthy food choices at the grocery store, by NAME BRAND.

Dec. 9, 2007 - PRLog -- The average grocery store carries 40,000 different products, and each year another 22,000 new food products are introduced. Deciding which of these to buy can be overwhelming, nerve racking, and down-right time consuming. Nutrition Education Partners, LLC, owned and operated by two Registered Dietitians, saw a need to develop Brand Name Grocery Lists to help consumers eat well without all the confusion.

Their brand name grocery lists allow people to walk into the grocery knowing which foods by name brand to buy to help them manage their weight, diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure or just eat healthy.  Having these grocery lists can save a lot of time and frustration trying to figure out exactly what the food labels mean.  “I know nutrition is not everyone’s hobby, so we made eating healthy easier in a sea of deceptive food options”, said Susan Mindoro, Register Dietitian and co-owner of Nutrition Education Partners.

What most people think are health claims on a product’s packaging, may really just be deceptive marketing. Government approved claims on food labels, like "low-fat" and "light," often don't tell the whole story. These products may contain trans fat as well as a lot of sugar, salt, and/or calories. This is why looking at both the nutrition facts and the ingredient list is so important.  In an attempt to cash in on the latest diet trend, many companies will promote their products based on a single item despite other unhealthy aspects. A truly healthy product must meet several nutritional criteria including low fat, trans fat free, high fiber and low sodium to make Nutrition Education Partner’s grocery lists.

Anybody can call themselves a nutritionist, but only a person with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition/dietetics, completed 6-12 month internship, and have passed a National Registration Exam, can call themselves a Registered Dietitian. These are the people you want to help you meet your diet and health needs.
