| Jonathan Ullmer Hamburg: Celebrating a Visionary Educator Who Turns Challenges Into SuccessBy: jonathanullmerhamburg For Jonathan Ullmer, teaching has always been more than a profession. "Empowering young people, giving them a voice, and watching them grow into leaders of the future – nothing beats that," he reflects. This guiding belief has shaped a career that spans several continents and a series of high-impact roles at Cecil Jones High School, Sawyers Hall College, CATS Cambridge, CATS Canterbury, and Haileybury Astana in Kazakhstan. At Cecil Jones High School, serving one of the five most deprived catchment areas in the UK, Ullmer helped turn the Arts Faculty into a national success story. Under his leadership, the school earned a National Drama Award and was one of the first to achieve Artsmark Gold. Large-scale arts festivals, street theatre performances on Southend High Street, and inclusive drama events saw three-quarters of students actively involved in creative activities – proving that deprivation need not determine destiny. Later, at Sawyers Hall College, a school placed in 'special measures', Ullmer worked alongside a new leadership team to drive a full-scale turnaround. Enterprise Days involving organisations such as NatWest, British Gas, and the Army brought real-world learning into the classroom for over 1,000 students annually. Even in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, he led a Sixth Form drama trip to New York after careful consultation with families, choosing courage, continuity, and confidence in the face of fear. At CATS Cambridge and CATS Canterbury, Jonathan Ullmer Hamburg spearheaded a transformation that took both colleges from decline to award-winning excellence. CATS Cambridge achieved an 'Outstanding' leadership rating, while CATS Canterbury attained 'Excellent' across all categories. Innovating beyond academics, he introduced an acclaimed boarding programme with a "Tell Us" feedback button, guaranteeing rapid responses and building deep trust between students and staff. These efforts yielded multiple national awards, including recognition from the Independent Schools Association and the Times Educational Supplement. About Jonathan Ullmer Hamburg Jonathan Ullmer Hamburg is an internationally recognised educator and school leader, honoured with an MBE for services to education and young people. Over several decades, he has led and transformed schools in the UK and abroad, with a consistent focus on empowering students, raising standards, and building cultures of creativity, trust, and courage.
