By: J Michael Consulting

ROSWELL, Ga. - July 9, 2025 - PRLog -- J Michael Consulting (JMC) is pleased to announce it has been awarded the contract to implement the Alaska National Electronic Disease Surveillance System Base System (NBS), a modern, CDC-developed platform for managing reportable and notifiable disease data across public health jurisdictions.

Under the contract, JMC will lead the assessment, design, deployment, and support for Alaska's adoption of an integrated disease surveillance system. Leveraging CDC's robust NBS framework, JMC will connect hospitals, laboratories, and state and local health departments to securely manage clinical, epidemiologic, and laboratory data across more than 140 tracked conditions.

Project Scope & Objectives:
  • Integrated data exchange platform using national standards (HL7, LOINC, SNOMED, RxNorm) to support efficient case and lab reporting.
  • Comprehensive case management tools, from electronic lab report ingestion to case investigation, workflows, and automated CDC-level notifications. The system features unified patient records, dynamic data forms, role-based security, and decision support.
  • Rapid, iterative system modernization, following CDC's agile approach to deliver enhancements and new features without disrupting operations.

Why It Matters:
  • Enhances timeliness, accuracy, and interoperability of disease surveillance by automating case reporting to both Alaska officials and CDC.
  • Supports multi-condition monitoring (140+), covering endemic and emerging threats -e.g., COVID19, mpox, vaccine preventable diseases (VPD), sexually transmitted infections (STI), and foodborne illnesses.
  • Promotes data-driven decision-making, outbreak response, and public health interventions across jurisdictional boundaries.

Implementation Strategy & Support:
  • CDC will provide NBS to Alaska at no software cost; JMC will manage configuration, integration, cloud hosting readiness per Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity funding guidelines, and data migration via PHDC tools.

Comments from the CEO:
"Implementing Alaska's NBS represents a transformative step in public health informatics," said Jon Lipsky, CEO of J Michael Consulting. "Our team is honored to partner with Alaska's health agencies, tribal entities, and community providers to deploy a system that is standards-based, secure, and extensible improving disease surveillance and response across the state."

New era of collaboration:
The project will be guided by active engagement in the NBS Community a group of 100+ NBS users and contributors including Alaska key partners participating in CDC coordinated calls, change-control meetings, and user testing.
