GENEVA - July 3, 2025 - PRLog -- SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 090.25 to highlight the release of ASTM F1487-25, a revised version of the consumer safety performance specification for public-use playground equipment.

Approved on April 15, 2025, and published in June by ASTM International, the new standard updates critical safety and performance requirements for a wide variety of playground structures in schools, parks, childcare facilities, recreation centers and other public-use environments. It aims to minimize the risk of serious or life-threatening injuries, such as those identified by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

ASTM F1487-25 includes several notable changes, such as:
- A new definition for 'fully enclosed structure'
- Revised exemptions for suspended components
- Updated handrail height specifications for wheelchair-accessible ramps
- Added requirements for fully enclosed tube slides and structures
- Criteria for roofs that are part of enclosed structures
- Structural guidance for rotating equipment subject to lateral loads
- New reference figures (A1.68 to A1.72)

The standard defines public-use playground equipment as structures intended for use in spaces such as schools, parks, childcare centers, resorts, restaurants and other areas where children access play equipment.

These revisions were developed by ASTM Subcommittee F15.29 on Playground Equipment for Public Use as part of ongoing efforts to enhance safety and ensure consistency in design and construction.

SGS publishes SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed of key regulatory and standards developments. SafeGuardS 090.25 provides detailed insights into the updates introduced in ASTM F1487-25.

Stakeholders are encouraged to review SafeGuardS 090.25 for a complete overview of the revised playground safety standard.
