SAG-AFTRA Member Chuck Slavin Proposes Constitutional Amendment to Extend Union Election Cycle

LOS ANGELES - May 8, 2025 - PRLog -- Chuck Slavin, a long-standing member of SAG-AFTRA and advocate for union reform, has formally proposed a constitutional amendment to extend the union's national election cycle from two years to three years. This change is in accordance with the flexibility permitted under the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (LMRDA).

Slavin's proposal aims to bolster organizational stability, reduce the financial and operational costs associated with frequent elections, and provide union leadership with more time to concentrate on advancing critical member interests. Among the top priorities he identifies are negotiating fair contracts, addressing the rapid rise of artificial intelligence in entertainment, and ensuring equitable streaming residuals.

"Extending the election cycle to three years is not only legally permissible under the LMRDA but also a common-sense step toward a more stable and effective union," said Slavin. "Other unions already operate on this timeline, and it provides leadership with the continuity needed to tackle long-term challenges without the constant disruption of campaign cycles."

The proposal also points to potential benefits such as reducing election-related disputes and addressing past concerns regarding voting irregularities. Slavin is calling on the SAG-AFTRA Governance Department, National Board, and relevant committees to review the amendment to ensure full compliance with federal regulations and the union's governing documents.

Slavin has expressed his openness to further discussion and feedback from the membership, with the goal of having the amendment considered at the next SAG-AFTRA Convention.
