Exploring robotics: apprentices as multipliers of automation

GLW Velbert education centre modernizes training workshop with low-cost robots from igus

GENTING LANE, Singapore - Jan. 28, 2025 - PRLog -- The metal and electrical industry is facing significant challenges due to a decline in applicants for university places and apprenticeships, leading to a shortage of skilled workers. The GLW Velbert education centre near Essen is addressing this by modernizing its training workshop with cost-effective robots from igus, aiming to make the industry more attractive to young people and turn them into ambassadors for automation.

Key issues include:
  1. A 33% drop in applicants for dual courses and a 60% drop for apprenticeships.
  2. A shortage of qualified trainers, exacerbated by the retirement of the baby boomer generation.
  3. Limited adoption of automation in medium-sized companies due to perceived high costs and complexity.

The GLW Velbert centre, supported by state and federal funds, plays a crucial role in training skilled workers and supporting local companies.

Cobots from the igus ReBeL series have recently been added to the training workshop
The GLW Velbert training workshop showcases the modern possibilities in the metal and electrical industry, featuring advanced technology like 3D printers and robots alongside traditional machines. Funded by the TRAIBER.NRW project with €4.1 million until mid-2025, the workshop integrates new technologies into its dual training system.

Key highlights include:
  • Three transparent robot cells with ReBeL series robots from igus, used for light pick-and-place tasks.
  • The use of PlayStation controllers and igus Robot Control software to make robot operation intuitive and engaging for apprentices.
  • Compatibility of ReBeL robots with programmable logic controllers (PLC), allowing apprentices to practice integrating robots into existing systems.
This modern approach not only enhances technical skills but also makes the training process more enjoyable and relevant for young people.

Reindl and Tielsch believe that GLW trainees can promote automation in the metal and electrical industry. They want apprentices to show companies that modern automation is now affordable and easy to implement. While traditional industrial robots can cost over €100,000, the ReBeL robot costs just €4,970. Reduced programming and integration efforts make automation more accessible, potentially driving widespread adoption in the industry.

The ReBeL robot from Cologne is cost-effective due to its high-performance plastic construction, making it the lightest service robot in its class at 8kg. Companies can configure and order it online, including accessories, for budgets under €12,000. This low-cost robotics solution helps companies automate routine tasks and improve competitiveness, paving the way for a new generation of skilled workers.
