TOMS RIVER, N.J. - Dec. 10, 2024 - PRLog -- The holiday season, often portrayed as a time of joy and togetherness, can be an isolating and challenging period for many. A 2021 survey by the National Alliance on Mental Illness found that 3 in 5 Americans experience a negative impact on their mental health during the holidays. Feelings of loneliness, stress, and sadness can become overwhelming, leaving individuals searching for support and connection.

This is where CONTACT of Ocean & Monmouth Counties (CONTACT) steps in. As a 24-hour Crisis Intervention and Listening telephone service, CONTACT provides a safe, non-judgmental space for those who are lonely, depressed, or in crisis. "Our dedicated volunteers are simply "people helping people," always ready to listen and respond to the needs of our community," stated Kim Santora, Executive Director of CONTACT.

Steps to Prioritize Your Mental Health This Holiday Season
The holiday season doesn't have to feel insurmountable. Here are a few ways to prioritize your mental health:
  1. Accept Your Feelings: It's okay to feel overwhelmed, sad, or anxious. Acknowledging your emotions can be the first step toward healing.
  2. Maintain Healthy Habits: Prioritize sleep, eat nourishing foods, and incorporate physical activity into your routine.
  3. Set Boundaries: It's okay to say no to events, traditions or people that feel draining or unnecessary.
  4. Make Time to Connect: Reach out to friends, family, or organizations like CONTACT for support.
For over 49 years, CONTACT has been a trusted resource for those seeking an empathetic ear. CONTACT volunteers undergo extensive training to develop listening skills that help callers explore their feelings, identify options, and find inner strength to address their challenges. If needed, volunteers can provide referrals to other community services.

Every conversation is confidential and the caller is treated with the utmost respect. "We do not offer advice or attempt to solve problems; instead, we provide a compassionate space where callers feel heard, valued and understood," noted Santora.

If you find yourself feeling lonely, overwhelmed, or in need of someone to talk to during this holiday season, CONTACT is here for you. Volunteers are available around the clock, every day of the year. To speak with a CONTACT volunteer, call: 732-240-6100.

Remember, reaching out for help is a sign of strength. This holiday season, let CONTACT be your connection to hope and support.
