Another Mass School Shooting, But Most Schools Are Still Unprepared

WASHINGTON - Sept. 4, 2024 - PRLog -- Another mass shooting has just occurred, this time at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia.  The result is that two students as well as two teachers were murdered, and almost a dozen victims of the shooting were taken to area hospitals.

Although many details are unknown and still being investigated, it appears that it was only the presence of school security officers already on the scene, who almost immediately confronted the student with the gun and forced him to drop his weapon and surrender, prevented far more murders and malicious wounding of innocent victims, says public interest law professor John Banzhaf.

This quick end to the rampage by armed personnel already on the scene emphasizes one of many recommendations this former security official and security consultant made to schools in an international study (https://www.universityworldnews.com/post.php?story=20221011124140599) of simple and inexpensive steps schools can and should take to slash the risk of deaths the next time a crazed gunman appears on a campus; a tragic event which is readily foreseeable and virtually inevitable.

Unfortunately - although it's been almost two years since the study with its recommendations was published in the University World News (https://www.universityworldnews.com/post.php?story=202210...), and about 25 years since the Columbine massacre - too many schools (including lower grades, colleges and universities) have not taken even routine precautions to protect their students and teachers should their school be the next target of a crazed shooter.

Because armed personnel were already on the scene and were able to bring the shooting to a very rapid conclusion, only one of the study's recommendations - All classroom doors should be capable of being locked, and can be locked from the inside without anyone having to step out into the hall where they might be exposed to the gunman - might have helped present more deaths.

The law professor says that its also important to note that a major U.S. university was recently forced to pay $15 million to the families of three students killed by a gunman for the same basic failure to take reasonable precautions:
