Four torches lit each corner of the land that was level, and everything beyond the paved grounds was black wilderness. Over the years, Farhad, Ali and Hamid, the three Azadi brothers, built their stone homes here in Shemiran, only a few feet apart from maman Sharif's, which was situated in the middle and loomed as the most imposing terraced home of all four. At the very end of the compound was the guesthouse, originally built for Farhad and his bride, but Ziba refused it so it lay empty except for the occasional overnight guest or a servant spared the trip back to the outskirts of Tehran. Nearly every house in Iran had a garden in front and a street wall to guard it, but the Azadi compound had two baghs, but it was this rear garden that was reserved for elaborate Friday night dinner parties, which had grown to legendary proportions over the years. Celebrities and diplomats, guests of the Shah, once flocked to the Azadis' for a taste of the watered-down exotic, but lately, many stopped attending the banquets. Some had already fled Iran for safety. The protests against the Shah started the year before, in 1978, but had grown quite bloody, though some thought not bloody enough. Whenever a protester was shot by the Immortal Army, people took to the streets 40 days afterwards, echoing the Islamic mourning ritual. They would only disperse after another shooting. The cycle was endless.
