PHOENIX - May 24, 2024 - PRLog -- Arizonans know to apply sunscreen and protective clothing to avoid solar threats. Another danger that emerges with the summer heat is the onset of stinging pests like scorpions. Once temperatures rise above 70 degrees, scorpions become more active – especially at night.

Scorpion stings are common in Arizona. The Poison Control Centers in Arizona receives

around 20,000 calls a year concerning scorpion stings. That number is estimated to be only a fraction of actual stings with a much higher number going unreported.

"Scorpions begin to be a real problem now that it's warming up," said Casey Shaw, head technician for Lunar Pest Control. It's not so much because of how warm it is during the day, but the fact it stays warm during the night. This is the case for mostly all pests during the summer."

Scorpion stings are painful, but generally not fatal. However, the repercussions can have dangerous consequences.

"I was talking with a potential customer in Scottsdale who told me that years ago her son was stung by a scorpion and was paralyzed and had to get anti-venom for $18,000 at the hospital," said Shaw, a lifelong Arizona resident with more than 15 years of experience in pest control. "A lot of people sometimes have these reactions because of a sting. Another dangerous pest although not as common is the Arizona recluse, it is basically our version of the brown recluse."

Shaw recommends regular pest control service as a preventative measure. The company currently offers a $45 savings with the code 45OFF. The discount applies to $15 off on the first three services. Regular pest control is more important than ever because stinging and biting pests are more active now.

In addition to regular pest control, Shaw suggests a few precautions that Arizonans can take to keep pests at bay.
  • Use an ultra-violet light and scan the home and yard between 8-11 p.m. Scorpions are more easily spotted in the dark with the use of ultra-violet lights
  • Remove potential homes for pests by eliminating trash, logs, boards, stones, bricks and other objects from around the home and other buildings such as tool sheds.
  • Install weather-stripping around loose fitting doors and windows. This has the added advantage of reducing energy costs from reducing the amount of cool air from leaking out of the house.
