Construct a Sustainable Ecological City with a Network of Retention Ponds

TAOYUAN, Taiwan - Nov. 20, 2023 - PRLog -- Dr. Hung-Chih Lu devotes his life to creating public welfare with eco-friendly technology and art. Although the reality is that it is becoming difficult to implement more and more, he can build the planning blueprint in a digital twin way in his ecological Metaverse to leave a glimmer of hope for future generations.

This time, he took the Taipei 101 area as the theme, using Google Earth's 3D aerial photography as the basis for his creation. He named this type of urban planning "Tree-Shaped Retention Pond Layout Method", which uses the shape of a tree as the overall layout. The retention ponds scattered throughout the city are like the leaves of a tree, the drainage pipes connected to them are like the 2nd-branches of a tree, the collector pipes that collect these drainage pipes are like the branches of a tree, and the finally collected rivers or artificial canals are like the trunk of a tree, and the sea into which they flow is like the roots and soil of a tree.

In appropriate areas, a network of retention ponds can be set up in a star-shaped pattern. By properly using the gates at each interface, the water level can be well regulated and managed. In the case of rising sea levels, closing the gates at each interface can effectively lower the sea level within the city, thereby reducing the risk of seawater intrusion. In the case of extreme weather storms, opening the gates at each interface can effectively discharge storm floods, prevent the city's drainage system from overloading, and thereby reduce the extent and severity of city flooding.

Constructing retention ponds that take into account ecology in modern cities has many positive impacts on cities. As shown in Figure 2, this work was created using 3D modeling and rendering, plus AI-assisted optimization. Because RC buildings are not environmentally friendly and have high carbon emissions, all buildings are converted to steel structures. The walls can be curtain walls, solar curtain walls, metal walls, imitation marble walls, and imitation wood walls, all of which are environmentally friendly materials with high recycling and reuse rates. Retention ponds are maintained and managed by dedicated personnel every day to ensure that they are kept in good condition.

This creation can provide our city with a variety of habitats for living things, increasing the biodiversity of the city. They can also improve the microclimate of the city, reduce temperatures and air pollution, mitigate the urban heat island effect, and increase the comfort and health of residents.
