Civil society platform joins Climate March to call on states to scale up effective climate finance

NEW YORK - Sept. 16, 2023 - PRLog -- In time for the Climate Ambition Summit at the United Nations, civil society organisations and people's movements from around the world will converge in New York City for the Climate March to #EndFossilFuels on September 17th, 2023. Among other demands, they will ask countries to "decolonise in order to decarbonise", as a matter of climate justice.

For its part, global civil society platform CSO Partnership for Development Effectiveness (CPDE) is set to push for effective climate finance, anchored in effective development cooperation principles.

A study estimates climate debt owed by the global North to the global South to be a staggering 170 trillion dollars, reflecting the North's historical dominance in fossil fuel production and consumption. This issue is compounded by the disproportionate burden of climate change impacts borne by the populations of the global South.

Global North nations are then urged to overhaul the climate finance framework, granting developing countries control over their development agendas, and involving civil society in decision-making processes to ensure transparency and the implementation of effective solutions.

CPDE champions development effectiveness within climate finance (https://csopartnership.org/resource/cpde-climate-finance-...) (CF) by advocating for the adoption of four core principles: (i) developing countries should take ownership of their development priorities, (ii) focus on results to inform decision-making, monitoring, and evaluation, (iii) foster inclusive partnerships that engage diverse stakeholders in decision-making processes, and (iv) upholding transparency and mutual accountability

The platform argues that working towards a just transition requires funding projects, movements and institutions that put people and the planet over profit, adopt a feminist-based approach, and commit to leaving no one behind  - all key pillars of development effectiveness principles. CPDE upholds the principles of climate equity and of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities (CBDR-RC).

CPDE supports the Global Campaign to Demand Climate Justice. Among the key priorities raised by the CSO-led movement regarding climate justice are:

1. Keep fossil fuels in the ground
2. Reject false solutions
3. Advance real solutions that are just, feasible, and essential.
4. Honour climate finance obligations to developing countries.
5. End corporate interference in and capture of the climate talks.
6. Ensure developed countries are held accountable in the "Fair Shares" they owe to developing countries for largely fueling this crisis.

These demands reflect the need for systemic change, environmental sustainability, and social justice in addressing the climate crisis.
