Navigating the Summer Surge in New Jersey

In New Jersey, a DWI is considered a significant violation. A first offense DWI can carry a loss of license depending on one's blood alcohol content (BAC). In the state of New Jersey, a driver with a BAC of .08 or below can still be charged with a DWI. Experts say it only takes 3 drinks (12 oz beer, 5 oz wine, or a shot of liquor) consumed in under an hour for a BAC to reach up to .08%.

According to the 2023 State of New Jersey Highway Safety Plan, "over the past 5 years (2016-2020), the months of May, July and August experienced higher-than-average crashes involving alcohol." Efforts to reduce driving under the influence in 2023 include high-visibility enforcement campaigns in targeted locations and on a sustained basis in some locations.
