Although worldwide uptake of effective vaccines has limited morbidity and mortality associated with COVID-19, the virus and its evolving variants continue to strain healthcare systems. According to the CDC, the 7-day daily average of new hospitalizations from December 28, 2022–January 3, 2023, was 6,519 in the United States. The most prevalent subvariant – XBB.1.5 – appears more transmissible than previous Omicron strains and demonstrates immune evasion properties. "Over the last three years, researchers and healthcare professionals have made tremendous strides in treating COVID-19," notes Dinora Chinchilla, MD, Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor at UC Irvine School of Medicine. "However, we must stay vigilant. It's clear that there has been an uptick in cases and hospitalizations tied to XBB.1.5, and patients can still become seriously ill.
