By: NGO News The data provided by the government with the statistics in 2019 states that the number of organs donated by the deceased due to brain or cardiac death is low. On the other hand, the number of donations was from living donors, which is the highest compared to the past data. But when we compare this data with the year 2021, only 14% of organs were obtained from the deceased, which is less than the 16.8% seen in 2019. The organ donations are seen delivered from only 15 Indian states, with more numbers seen in the South and West states. According to Dr. Krishan Kumar, director of the National Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation, "the number of living donors increased with the COVID-19 restrictions being lessened and the starting of routine surgeries in the hospitals. At the same time, deceased donations are increasing slowly". Medical professionals all over India are trying their best to reverse this trend of using almost 80% of transplants using organs from living donors.
