Follow on Google News | Annual Black Artists Ornament Show features holiday ornaments from the U.S., Haiti and AfricaBy: Zawadi African Art Gallery and Boutique "Zawadi has hosted this ornament showcase to celebrate and reflect the diverse cultures and traditions during the holiday season. For over 30 years, Zawadi has held space on U Street for Black artists in D.C. and around the world, creating a community for our supporters, and connecting with the next generation," Zawadi's Annual Black Artists Show pays homage and continues a tradition started by artist Karl Graham. For years, Graham coordinated an African ornament show at Belmont Arts. Named after the building's street, 1800 Belmont Rd, NW, in the Adams-Morgan community, Belmont Arts was the center of art, culture, enterprise, and community. From 1991 to 2002, Belmont Arts was an incubator, community gathering space, and laboratory for innovation and imagination across disciplines and media. About Zawadi African Art Gallery and Boutique Zawadi, in Kenyan, African origin, means "gift" in Kiswahili. Zawadi African Art Gallery and Boutique opened on U St. in Washington, D.C., 30 years ago in 1992 and has grown and evolved along with the street, which is now a major attraction for diverse and well-traveled visitors. The owner, Irene T. Whalen, lived and worked in East, West, and Southern Africa, bringing Zawadi the continent's knowledge and a strong commitment to small-scale entrepreneurs and the environment. Zawadi features contemporary and traditional African art focusing on home goods. Textiles, accessories, and traditional art pieces change frequently and are often one of a kind. There is always something special to be found in Zawadi. https://zawadiarts.com/ End
