Founded in 1858 by African-American Catholics, Saint Augustine is the second-oldest Catholic parochial school in the Archdiocese of Washington and the first Catholic school established to educate African American children in the District. For 167 years, Saint Augustine Catholic Church and School has been a cornerstone of community empowerment and academic achievement. Known as the "Mother Church of Black Catholics" in the Nation's Capital, Saint Augustine Catholic Church provided leadership and hope to a community, many of whom experienced firsthand the ravages of slavery several years before the Civil War and the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation. Rooted in their extraordinary faith and passionate commitment to Catholic education, Black Catholics in Washington, D.C., forged ahead to carve out a sure pathway to opportunity and justice.
