WASHINGTON - Jan. 4, 2023 - PRLog -- Nubian Hueman, a Southeast D.C. Anacostia community, a Black woman-owned business, celebrated the closure of this location with an emphasis on art, commerce, and its future on December 29th. The retailer, which has invested more than $2.7 million in Black-owned businesses and services since its inception in 2013, commemorates its evolution as owner Anika Hobbs increases the digital presence with plans to launch a mobile app in early 2023.

Hobbs founded Nubian Hueman to provide a much-needed platform to introduce Washingtonians to global Black and Brown brands, many of which received their first opportunity in a brick-and-mortar store. The business stood as a trailblazer as one of the first businesses in the Anacostia Arts Center and received local and national recognition for its beautifully curated space and specialized offerings. The shop also served as a gathering space for artists, artisans, and creatives from across the globe to showcase their work, host events, and socialize with the local community.

Nubian Hueman's mission is to promote Black culture, aesthetics, and the creative economy. "The thing that gets me motivated is working with a brand that may not have an opportunity on the bigger shelf, but they can make it at Nubian Hueman. If we can be a catalyst or jump-start to their mass production, that is an honor within itself," said Hobbs.

The shop officially closed on December 31st. Continuing its tradition of meaningful assembly, hundreds of supporters attended the closing celebration to sip Black-owned wines, watch open mic performances, and experience interactive exhibits. Speaking at the event, Hobbs said, "It is not a sad event. It is bittersweet. It is not the end, but a move forward."

Nubian Hueman champions diversity in the marketplace and constantly seeks new and innovative strategies to expand its business and reinvest in emerging brands. Nubian Hueman will continue to operate its physical location in Baltimore, offer retail services in the District, maintain its online store, and now offers a membership program with rewards and discounts for its loyal customers.
