September Signals a Return to the Workforce

If returning to the workforce after an absence, some people may have difficulty with the transition

LOS ANGELES - Aug. 7, 2022 - PRLog -- The start of the new school year means some stay-at-home moms are returning to the workplace. It may not be an easy transition.

The kids are headed back to the classroom, and that means it is time for some moms to head back to the workforce.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2021, 65.6 percent of mothers with children under age 6 participated in the labor force, compared with 75.5 percent of mothers whose youngest child was age 6 to 17. (Source: https://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/famee.pdf)

The cost of child care is often cited as a reason for the decision to stay home — the average cost for child care for a four-year-old in California is $11,475, or $956 each month, according to the Economic Policy Institute (https://www.epi.org/child-care-costs-in-the-united-states/#/CA). Once the youngest child is enrolled in school, however, many women return to the workforce, even if only part-time.

When returning to the workforce after an absence many may have difficulty with the transition. They may struggle to explain the gap on their resume, says Mandy Fard, CPRW, of Market-Connections Professional Resume Writing Services.

"Often the biggest challenge is accounting for the gap," says Fard. "The first step is to take an inventory of your skills and experience that will be valuable to your next employer. If you have older children, have you volunteered at your child's school? Have you helped with fundraisers? Have you organized field day? Have you participated in any charitable efforts?"

"The second step is to figure out what you need to be successful in returning to work," Fard added. "Do you need to take a computer class? How about a course or two to renew a certification or license? Have you joined your industry's professional association to make contacts at companies that are hiring?"

"The final step is putting it all together on the resume — and LinkedIn profile," Fard said. "If you are not sure how to translate your volunteer experience into concrete resume content, a professional resume writer can help."
