The Wax

Most candles are made from a blend of waxes – the cheaper ones use paraffin wax and stearic acid, whilst the pricier candles are made from soy wax.  Soy wax is a vegetable wax with a significantly high melting point, meaning that it burns much longer than paraffin wax, burns cleaner and significantly enhances and distributes the scents it contains.  Soy wax is a little more expensive, but it offers much better value (and perfume!) for money in the long term.

The Wick

The wicks used for scented candles are typically made from the braided cotton wound around a central zinc core.  The zinc core creates a larger pool of melted wax around the wick, which releases more perfume into the air in the room.  The wicks are treated to slow down the burning speed and the diameter of the wick is chosen to ensure a slow burn for the size of the candle.

The Whiff
