PRLog -- AMERICANS: NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN UNION, N.J. — Gabbi Lee, a cultural interpreter at the National Museum of the American Indian, will be the speaker during a virtual event hosted by the Holocaust Resource Center of Kean University and its partners. In observance of National American Indian Heritage Month, Lee will discuss American Indian images, names, and stories infused in American history and contemporary life. They are pervasive, powerful, and at times, demeaning. "Stereotypical depictions of American Indians are rampant in all facets of society, including our education system," says Dr. Adara Goldberg, Holocaust Resource Center director. "This collaboration with the NMAI advances knowledge of the diversity of American Indian experiences, and highlights the oft-overlooked richness of regional cultures, languages, and historical contributions."
The images, names, and stories Lee will discuss reveal how Indians have been embedded in unexpected ways in the history, pop culture, and identity of the United States. This event is co-sponored by the HRC's partners: Kean University's Human Rights Institute and School of Communication, Media, and Journalism, and the Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Raritan Valley Community College.
