The study examined two metrics from the survey date: the percentage of normal weight residents as determined by body mass index (BMI) and the rate of residents who exercise at all. To determine the fittest cities, AdvisorSmith compared 124 metropolitan areas. The research determined that the fittest cities in the nation all came from different parts of the country. An average of 31 percent of residents had normal body weight, 51 percent exercised aerobically for at least 150 minutes a week, and 75 percent had exercised once in the last month. The fittest city in American was Burlington, VT. The city had a fitness score of 92 because 41 percent of residents had normal BMI, and 83 percent stated they exercised at least once in the past month. AdvisorSmith compared 49 states and the District of Columbia to determine the fittest states in the country. The fittest state in American was Washington, D.C. The state received a fitness score of 92 because 42 percent of residents had normal BMI, and 81 percent stated they exercised at least once in the past month.
