Due to the difficulty in diagnosing HF, there is a two and half year delay from the onset of symptoms to the start of effective treatment, even in the best health care systems. As a result, 46% of patients with HF have worsening symptoms and are diagnosed with HF during their first admission
The single most useful test to diagnose Heart Failure is Echocardiography. This is the only test where the diagnosis of HF, the cause, severity and prognosticate HF. It can be used to start appropriate treatment as well as monitor the effectiveness of the therapy on followup. Echocardiography is thus the gold standard for diagnosing heart failure.
The unmet need for echocardiography to diagnose heart failure is highlighted by the fact that the median time from the presentation with symptoms to investigations was 292 days (IQR 34–844)
