-- After considering the multitude of outcomes this school year might bring, educators Hayley Peter and Joseph Hamer came together to find a silver lining. Hayley explains, "We understand that we cannot change the effects of coronavirus over night, but what we can do is create tools and resources to help smooth the transition for parents and educators, as children across the world step foot into their classrooms."
While our emotions play a key role in our ability to react to relevant threats, our emotions are highly affected by the amount of information we are receiving, accurate or inaccurate. As we teach our children to focus on the power of their immune system, a trust of their inner environment, and its ability to function at optimum; we can begin to emphasize what we do have control over. Our body's reactions to the information we are receiving from both the media and those around us, can simply be information as we observe. We can create space for ourselves to continue trusting in what is
working while regulating our responses.Brain Awakes
is an activity book that empowers children to recognize and regulate their emotions through short activities. Each activity occupies less than five minutes of your parents, teachers, or counselors' time, and aims to expand your child's understanding of their mind body connection. The reflection section then serves as a guide for valuable conversations, leaving children curious about their relationship and contribution to the world around them. This book incorporates themes in nature to model our relationship with our emotional states. Notice how a chameleon shifts into the color of its environment, and practice choosing the environment you want to live in. Create a storm with your children modeling a stressful state, then breathe together as you notice how the breath can bring feelings of calm and relaxation.
"There is no doubt that our children have been exposed to extreme emotions since leaving in March." Joseph says, "and Brain Awakes
provides us with instant activities to captivate our children while expanding their awareness in a restorative way." Utilizing a few minutes to strengthen our children's emotional skills can create healthy patterns in a child's mind and body.
These playful practices will remind our children that they have the liberty to choose how they react to challenges while providing an opportunity to grow during a changing time.
