| ![]() UltraFlex soldering steel in 3-4 sec at target temperature of 800°F (426°C) using induction heaterThis steel soldering process, in addition to being super-fast, had been incredibly simple to operate.
In this demonstration, a brass cap and hollow steel had to be soldered to other parts. The customer was looking to achieve a time-efficient and energy-efficient process that could also be implemented on the line and was evaluating the usage of induction soldering to achieve that. UltraFlex application testing engineers considered the induction heaters from the UltraHeat S series to be most appropriate for this steel soldering scenario. UltraHeat S are small and economical 2kW induction heaters which operate with water-cooled or air-cooled remote heat stations. They utilize the latest switching power supply technology and feature adaptive digital phase control providing efficient operation in a wide frequency range. To achieve the soldering process, pre-formed solder was placed under the lip of the work piece (for the brass cap) and around the lip of the work piece (for the hollow steel). Applying power of 2 kW, the induction soldering process was completed in mere 3 seconds (for the brass cap) and 4 seconds (for the hollow steel). This steel soldering process, in addition to being super-fast, had been incredibly simple to operate. Hence, the operator's skill could now be eliminated as a critical factor for the quality of the soldered parts. The time- and energy-efficiency of the induction soldering process definitely convinced the customer that replacing flame-based soldering with induction-based soldering would result in a resource-efficient and faster soldering process. Last but not least, it would be a completely green operation - induction heaters do not burn traditional fossil fuels, and hence do not pollute the environment.
