In 2006, years following the arrest of her ex-spouse, John Allen Muhammad, known as the DC Sniper, Mildred founded "After The Trauma," a Maryland- based nonprofit. During its 6 year existence, the organization saved the lives of 200 women, nationally, including residents of the DC Metro Area. After the nonprofit closed due to inadequate funding, Mildred continued to assist victims of domestic abuse and violence. A few years ago, she helped a woman and child flee death. The police served the abuser a restraining order. He threw it on the ground and urinated on it. With the help of an organization in Georgia, they were able to move to a secure area. The survivor returned years later, and recognized Mildred for saving her life. Mildred assists, on average, 5 women per year, to flee some of the most violent cases of domestic violence. In 2010, Senator Lois Wolk, Senator Pat Wiggins, and Congressman John Garamendi, were among officials in the State of California, to honor Mildred's commitment to end domestic violence. She received award recognition throughout military communities for championship of the Family Advocacy Program and their mission to educate, promote and end domestic violence in military communities. This Proclamation Ceremony is the first acknowledgment in Mildred's residence of Prince George's County. The public is invited to attend.
