ATLANTA - Aug. 14, 2019 - PRLog -- On August 28, 2019, Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link Inc. (SEM Link,  will be joining #GivingBlackDay, a national day of giving, focused specifically on supporting black-led and black-benefitting organizations. This day takes place during Black Philanthropy Month, and is uniquely dedicated to supporting organizations doing vital work to uplift black communities. "As a Black woman in philanthropy, that is a founder of a nonprofit organization, it is important for my organization to participate in this fundraising campaign and for me to personally support it. Black-led organizations don't always get a platform to raise awareness and funds for their organizations. Black Giving Day is a great platform for organizations to highlight their work and for individuals that are interested in supporting these organizations to do so" stated Ms. Tokiwa T. Smith Founder and Executive Director of SEM Link.

#GivingBlack Day is also unique in that it falls on August 28, a day chosen due to its historical significance. Did you know that on:

·         August 28, 1955: 14-year-old Emmett Till was brutally murdered by three white men, which became a "flashpoint in the civil rights movement."

·         August 28, 1963: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his iconic "I Have A Dream" speech in Washington, D.C.

·         August 28, 2005: Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana. The storm, which devastated New Orleans, inordinately impacted many of the city's black residents.

·         August 28, 2008: Then-Senator Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for president, becoming the first black man to ever win the nomination and bid for the presidency.

August 28, 2019, SEM Link will have a social media campaign that will highlight the work of our two core programs Experimental Design Program and Math and Science Career Academy that enhance the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) educational experience for K-12 students by providing them with opportunities to engage in hands-on STEM activities, explore STEM careers and learn about real-world applications of STEM.
