| Music Student and Composer Scores Scholarship from Roadhaven ResortBy: Apache Junction Unified School District Mike Radniecki from Roadhaven inquired about potential scholarship recipients and Swigert was nominated by his teacher, Andie Chung. When the scholarship panel met with Swigert they were impressed with his work ethic, musical expertise and versatility. He sings, accompanies the high school choir on the piano, and has even composed original, award-winning scores on the piano. "Matthew came into my piano class four years ago. When he played a song that he wrote for me I could not believe it," said Ms. Chung, choral director at AJHS, and a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction recipient. "The composition was very creative and he knew how to make beautiful melodic lines. A year later, I recruited him as a Varsity Choir pianist. As the choir pianist, Matthew developed his sight reading skill during the last two years. This year he finally decided to perform vocally as well and he sings baritone in two choirs. He is a great musician and I'm so glad that I've been able to witness his growth as a pianist and singer!" Swigert can use the scholarship money for college tuition or other purposes. He plans on going to ASU and majoring in music after he graduates from AJHS this spring. For more information visit www.ajusd.org or call 480-982-1110. End
