How to choose a Plastic Surgeon

You should check the surgeon's credentials, their experience doing the type of procedure that you are interested in, if they have any specialized training or if they have done a fellowship, and lastly your comfortability in the office.

Checking the surgeon's credentials is extremely important. There are medical doctors who claim to be cosmetic or plastic surgeons, but they are not. There are no specific laws regarding cosmetic surgery. Any doctor, or even dentist, can hop on the cosmetic surgery bandwagon in pursuit of greater profits and higher profit margins. It is very important if you are going to have a cosmetic procedure done, that you make sure that the doctor performing the procedure is an actual plastic surgeon. If a doctor has training in general surgery, they can technically perform any cosmetic or plastic surgery without any formal training in cosmetic or plastic surgery. Questions that you can ask the doctor during your consultation are: What kind of doctor are you? Do you hold any board certifications?

Another thing that you want to make sure is that the doctor has experience doing the type of procedure or surgery that you are interested in having done. Every cosmetic procedure requires different skills or techniques and it is important to make sure that the doctor you choose has the skills required to do the procedure or surgery. For example, if you are interested in having a Rhinoplasty or nose job done, sometimes this requires manipulating bone and cartilage, you wouldn't want to choose a full body plastic surgeon, who mainly operates on breasts, performing this delicate and intricate surgery. You would want a facial plastic surgeon who focuses only on the face and performs this surgery quite often.  Questions that you can ask the doctor during your consultation are:  How many times have you performed this surgery? Can I see some before and after pictures?

Lastly, the single most important thing to consider when choosing a doctor to perform a procedure on you, is your comfortability with the doctor and the office staff. Be mindful of the atmosphere of the office from the moment that you walk in. You need to be 100% comfortable and confident with the doctor and the office staff to make your procedure go as smoothly as possible. You need to make sure that you have an open line of communication with the doctor and staff in case there are any issues that arise in the course of the recovery. Questions that you can ask the doctor during your consultation are: Will I be able to contact you after hours? Would I be able to get in soon if there is an issue?
