Moss/Kiewit under Contract for $471 Million Port Everglades Improvements
The Southport Turning Notch Expansion and Crane Rail Improvements are part of Port Everglades' multi-year expansion project which will lengthen the existing deep-water turn-around area for cargo ships from approximately 900 feet to 2,400 feet and will allow for up to five new cargo berths.
Designed by DeRose Design Consultant, Inc., the turning notch portion of the project will extend the port's Southport Turning Notch by approximately 1,500 feet to the west, with 1.5 miles of seawall/wharf construction, marine and utility infrastructure, and 18 acres of upland improvements. The project requires both excavation of 3 million cubic yards of material and environmental mitigation, including the creation of an artificial reef off the coast and relocation of coral from the existing turning notch to the new reef. The Crane Rail Improvement project, designed by Liftech Consultants, Inc., will include the construction of a new electrical switchgear building, 2.2 miles of electrical duct bank, and 4,500 LF of a new gantry crane foundation system. Once completed, the crane rail project will support 3 new gantry cranes.
"This is the latest project that we have been entrusted with at Port Everglades, which is Florida's leading container port and handles more than 1 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units," said Scott Moss, president of Moss. "It's an honor to have been selected to help grow the gateway to Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia, and it speaks to Moss' dedication to quality in the construction field."
"The Southport Turning Notch Extension plays a critical role in the future of Port Everglades and will strengthen its ability to meet the changing needs of the global shipping industry," said Bruce Applegate, project sponsor for Kiewit. "The project will have a positive, lasting impact on Broward County and we are proud to be part of it."
The project is slated for completion July 2023.
