When Is It Time for a Back Surgery?

By: Florida Orthopaedic Institute

TAMPA, Fla. - Oct. 16, 2018 - PRLog -- Back pain is a widespread occurrence, and practically everyone will experience back pain at some point in their life. Of course, not every back pain issue requires an operation. However, progressively worsening pain issues should be checked by your physician to know whether or not you need specialized treatment, including surgery.

The first thing you need to know is that back pain, since it is so common, usually passes in time. Sometimes it might take a few weeks, but if it's the result of a minor injury, it will go away.

On the other hand, if it doesn't, you should consult your doctor.

Once you do, you will know which non-surgical and conservative measures you should first exhaust, before looking into a back surgery. If unfortunately, these fail to alleviate the pain, then it's time to talk to a spinal surgeon.

Measures to Attempt Before Choosing Surgery

Most of these do-it-yourself measures should be attempted before opting for surgery.

●        Be active and physically fit. Back pain can often come from not moving or exercising enough. Try working out or just walking more and after a while, you'll probably feel better if the problem is not more severe.

●        The use of over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol™ (acetaminophen), Advil™/Motrin™ (ibuprofen), aspirin, or Aleve (naproxen) may help combat the short-term effects of minor strains and pains.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

There are several other types of spine surgery, which are traditionally used. However, minimally invasive spine surgery (https://www.floridaortho.com/specialties/spine/minimally-...) (MISS) has proven to be the best solution in many cases. It has more advantages when compared to other back surgeries:

●        Spending less time in the hospital (for most MISSs the required stay in the hospital is up to only two days.) More often than not, you can go home a couple of hours after the surgery.

●        Much faster recovery when compared to other surgeries

●        Less post-operative pain afterward

●        Less anesthesia used in the operation

●        Smaller incisions and thus fewer scars

●        Less blood loss, tissue and muscle damage

●        Very low risk of infection after the operation

All in all, however you look at it, minimally invasive spine surgery is a great option. Consult your physician to see if the procedure is right for you.
