PRLog -- Many people do not realize it when they land at McCarran Airport and are exposed to numerous billboards and advertisements for Grand Canyon tours that they are probably not seeing a tour that goes to the national park. An issue that has arisen over the course of the past few years is Las Vegas tourists booking Grand Canyon tours, and not being taken to the area they believed they were going to. This is because the traditional Grand Canyon viewing area is located in the national park area which is four hours drive from the city, and within the last ten years the Navajo Indian Tribe has created an alternative viewing area at the West Rim located about 2 hours from the city. Within this area they have constructed a tourist attraction called the "Skywalk" which is a glass bridge suspended over the canyon floor, but there has been little else as far as development of the area. Te area is not a scenic as the national park, nor is there the hiking and rafting activities that are available in the traditional viewing area. This particular project was created to lure travelers to Las Vegas who have very limited time to spend and are interested in quick, man-made attractions. True outdoors enthusiasts will not be satisfied with the West Rim, and should plan on the extra driving time to visit the actual national park.
When booking your tour of the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas, make sure that you inquire before paying if the tour is going to the South Rim or the West Rim. If there is marketing associated with it, chances are that it is going to the West Rim and the Skywalk, as the only real marketing for South Rim tours comes from touring companies that specialize in hiking and adventure tours. If you wanted to see the actual area that you have seen in pictures and magazines, you must book a South Rim tour.
